Food Day in Santa Barbara

Food Day is a national celebration of healthy, affordable, and sustainably produced food taking place all over the nation on October 24th—including Santa Barbara County.  This is an opportunity to educate our youth about “Eating Real” – cutting back on sugary drinks, unhealthy processed foods, and meat-heavy diets in favor of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and sustainably raised protein.

This annual event involves some of the country’s most prominent food advocates, united by a vision of food that is healthy, affordable, and produced with care for the environment, farm animals, and the people who grow, harvest, and serve it. In 2012, Food Day inspired 3,200 activities across the country, including thousands of school activities, community festivals in Denver, Savannah, and New York City, and a national conference in Washington, DC.

Why Food Day?

From www.foodday.org: The typical American diet contributes to obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and other costly health problems. Plus, a meat-heavy diet takes a heavy toll on the environment. Eating Real can save your own health and put our food system on a more humane, sustainable path. With America’s resources, there’s no excuse for hunger, low wages for food and farm workers, or inhumane conditions for farm animals.
